Collision at sea leaves one dead

A 60-foot yacht collided with a 25-foot boat off the coast of southern Rhode Island Tuesday morning, causing the smaller vessel to capsize and leaving its sole occupant dead, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Two Coast Guard vessels responded to the crash off Watch Hill, Rhode Island, in Fishers Island Sound shortly before 11 a.m. The operator of the Viking yacht, who was also alone, stayed with the capsized Parker boat and its occupant, who was taken to shore and later pronounced dead, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Coast Guard and Rhode Island State Police are investigating the crash. Authorities are not releasing the identity of the deceased until notification of next of kin.
