Morning Updates: Local Uzo Aduba wins 2nd Emmy; Bostonians flocked to see Black Mass
Good morning, Boston. Baby Bella’s father speaks about learning his daughter was killed, Black Mass was must-see in Boston, Dewey Square previews its new mural, and the rest of the news you need to know today.
Father of Baby Bella says mother’s boyfriend is at fault: “‘Our daughter is dead,’ [Bella’s father Joseph] Amoroso claimed [Bella’s mother Rachelle] Bond confessed to him. ‘The guy that’s been living in my house murdered our daughter.’ Amoroso, 32, said Bond told him that her boyfriend, 35-year-old Michael McCarthy, killed their daughter because he was convinced she was possessed by demons. … McCarthy [has been] charged with Bella’s murder.’’ (The Boston Globe)
Black Mass and Whitey Bulger drew big crowds locally: “Roughly 10% of the picture’s $23.4 million opening grosses came from [Boston’s] theaters. Typically they account for 2.7% of a picture’s domestic total. … Moreover, six of the top ten best performing theaters were in Boston, Warner Bros. reports. The three highest-grossing locations were all in Beantown and its surrounding environs — Loews Boston Common 19, AMC Assembly Row 12 in Somerville and Showcase Cinema in Revere.’’ (Variety)
Patriots win, and the rest of the AFC East is stuck looking up: “So much for that much-ballyhooed, ‘new and improved’ division. One week after all four AFC East occupants were 1-0 for the first time in NFL history, the Patriots put a relative stranglehold on the top spot in the standings. Ryan may one day prove to be a savior for the beleaguered Bills franchise, but the combination of bluster and delusion from upstate New York over the past week was not validated on Sunday. Not this year.’’ (Boston.com)
A new, word-heavy mural in Dewey Square: “I thought it was time to go away from something so pictorial toward something more conceptual,’’ said Paul Ha, director of the MIT List Visual Arts Center, who curated the mural in association with Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. “I’m hoping one person will turn to the next as they’re eating lunch and say, ‘What do you think this means?’ Hopefully it will get people talking and meet each other to have a conversation around art, which I think is always good.’’ (The Boston Globe)

The new mural by the Greenway puts the focus on its text.
Taking over the airwaves: “Long the domain of beer ads and commercials starring Peyton Manning, [NFL] games are suddenly blitzed by promotions for daily fantasy sports leagues. Boston-based DraftKings Inc. has aired more television ads over the past month than any other brand — more than 25,000 nationwide, according to the ad tracker iSpot.tv Inc. DraftKings’ chief rival, FanDuel Inc. of New York, ranks 12th, with more than 10,000.’’ (The Boston Globe)
Congrats to Boston’s Uzo Aduba for winning her second Emmy: “Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama on Sunday night—she won for comedy last year—and her speech was as emotional, heartfelt, and powerful as could be.’’ (Jezebel)
