NH Selectman asks cop to arrest him, gets arrested

Ask and ye shall receive.

Politicians have to put in time on the front lines of their communities: They show up to shake your hand, they ladle out servings at a soup kitchen. Or they direct traffic, even when a cop is already there taking care of it. And then they get arrested.

New Hampshire Selectman Harold Morse came across a clogged intersection Wednesday and took it into his own hands to direct traffic, the Eagle Tribune reports, even though a police officer was managing the chaos. When the officer on scene told Morse he appreciated the help but asked him to stop, Morse refused, and responded “You’re going to have to arrest me,’’ according to the Tribune.

So the officer arrested him. Morse was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

This isn’t the first time an area Selectman ran afoul of the law while trying to help his constituents. In August, Billerica Selectman George Simolaris took it into his own hands to repaint a fading crosswalk in his town’s center. He was facing destruction of property charges, according to The Boston Globe, but reached a settlement with the town to pay out a sum of $4,200 to cover the cost of cleaning up the paint.
