Cottontails are bouncing back in New England

Mark Lorenz / The Boston Globe

Fear not, cottontail lovers, the bunnies are making a comeback.

The New England cottontail was once on its way to endangered species status, but through conservation efforts is now able to be removed from the list, The Boston Globe reports.

The region’s only native rabbit lost nearly 90 percent of its habitat to development, the Globe reports, but efforts across federal, state, and private levels have secured almost 18,000 acres for the little fluffballs.

This is the first time a species in New England has been removed from the list of candidates for endangered classification, the Globe reports, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell called it “a great Endangered Species Act success story.’’
