Mayor Walsh wants gun owners to help stem gun violence
Mayor Marty walsh called on Boston’s 8,000 licensed gun owners to help prevent legal weapons from falling into the hands of criminals, according to The Boston Globe.
Firearm owners will receive a letter reminding them how to properly report the sale, loss, or theft of a firearm. Officials told The Globe that more accurate reporting on gun resales can help reduce gun violence by allowing police to track guns being used for crime that are sold on the street.
Police Commissioner William B. Evans said that the goal of the program is “to make sure that if guns are floating around, we can find out who the original owners are and hold them responsible.’’
The effort comes after a study commissioned by the city which found that nearly 500 guns recovered by Boston Police should have been reported to Massachusetts databases that track gun sales.
