Harvard Square reopens after water main break

A water main break late last week threatened to keep Harvard Square closed for the entirety of the holiday weekend, but it has reopened in time for Labor Day.

Harvard Square reopened around 3 a.m. Sunday, said Jeremy Warnick, a Cambridge police spokesman.

The break happened late Thursday night near the intersection of Mount Auburn and John F. Kennedy streets in Cambridge. At the time, Warnick said the break would cause detours throughout the weekend. The road has been filled temporarily, but will need permanent repairs in the coming weeks.

Even though the water main break is fixed for now, it’s safe to say there will be traffic delays throughout Greater Boston due to a visit from President Barack Obama Monday morning. The president will attend the Labor Council Labor Day Breakfast at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel.
