Mayor Walsh wants to ban replica handguns in public spaces

The Second Amendment says nothing about the right to bear fake Arms.

Mayor Marty Walsh filed an ordinance Monday to ban replica handguns in public spaces, according to the Mayor’s office. These regulations would start immediately, once approved by the City Council.

Under the ban, Boston Police would be allowed to confiscate replica handguns and hold them at the station until the owner came to collect them. If the owner is under the age of 18, a parent or gaurdian would be alerted and held responsible for picking up the replica firearm if they choose.

Replica handguns can be difficult to identify, which can cause uneasyness among the public and police, according to the Mayor’s Office.

“We’ve seen too many violent incidents this year, and we will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of Boston residents and visitors,’’ said Walsh in a statement. The Mayor’s office said it hopes the ban will help create a dialogue about the dangers of replica handguns and increase public safety.
