Mass. orders review of all pending private adoption cases

The Massachusetts Probate and Family Court wants to ensure the children have attorney representation.

The Massachusetts Probate and Family Court will review all pending private adoption cases to ensure that the children involved have attorneys to represent their interests, according toThe Boston Globe.

The court wouldn’t say what caused the review, but the Globe noted that the court has faced scrutiny for its handling of a 7-year-old Hardwick boy’s case, who has been in a coma since his father allegedly beat him.

It’s unclear how many cases will be reviewed, the Globe reported, but the state probate and family courts handle about 200 to 300 contested private adoption cases a year.

Charles P. Kindregan, a professor of law at Suffolk University, told the Globe that it’s important for children to have attorneys in these disputed adoption cases because they lead to the termination of a parent’s rights and the creation of a new family unit.
