Teen’s text to suicidal friend: ‘You have to just do it.’

Michelle Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter for encouraging a friend to commit suicide.

Michelle Carter listens to defense attorney Joseph P. Cataldo argues for the involuntary manslaughter charge against her to be dismissed, citing five separate arguments at Juvenile Court in New Bedford, Mass. AP

“You have to just do it…. Tonight is the night. It’s now or never.’’

That text message—allegedly sent by then 17-year-old Michelle Carter to Conrad Henri Roy III, days before Roy’s 2014 suicide—has become public as prosecutors fight a defense request to have the involuntary manslaughter case against Carter thrown out, according to The Boston Globe.

Carter, now 18, was indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in February, after encouraging her friend to commit suicide, the Bristol District Attorney’s Office said. Police found Roy, 18, dead in his car with evidence that lead authorities to believe he died of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carter said she loved Roy and promised to care for his grieving family, the Globe reports, and he just had to take some Benadryl and let an engine poison him with carbon monoxide, to have a life without pain.

“When are you going to do it,’’ she asked, according to the Globe. “Stop ignoring the question.’’

Roy proposed that he and Carter commit suicide together, saying “Let’s do a Romeo and Juliet,’’ but Carter refused, the Globe reported.

The Bristol County Juvenile Court Judge did not yet rule on the defense’s motion.
