Smoldering cables inside a Red Line tunnel near Boston’s South Station caused severe delays for Friday evening commuters, according to the MBTA.

Boston firefighters cleared the scene at about 6:20 p.m., according to the department. No injuries were reported, and normal service resumed shortly before 7 p.m.

Shuttle buses had been replacing Red Line trains between Park Street and JFK/UMass stations since roughly 5 p.m.
