Oh God, this terrifying wind-powered beast is coming to Boston

The Peabody Essex Musuem will bring this Strandbeest to Crane's Beach. The Boston Globe

Visitors to Crane Beach this Saturday better be prepared to meet some new wildlife. The strandbeest, a plastic art structure that moves like a stalking animal, is ready to scare your children.

Strandbeests, which means “beach animals’’ in Dutch, are the creation of Dutch artist Theo Jansen. The creatures travel with the wind along beaches as a bizarre, fascinating blend of art, science, physics, and natural beauty.

Jansen and his kinetic art structures will come to Boston City Hall Plaza and Dewey Square next Friday, and then to the MIT Media Lab’s plaza on Sept. 10.

After that, the wind-powered, brainless skeletons will be shown off at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum from September through January 2016. They’ll then move on a tour of Chicago, San Francisco, and possibly New York, The New York Times reports.
