Dash-cam cop speaks to internal affairs

Medford Police Detective Stephen LeBert is scheduled to go before the Internal Affairs department Thursday concerning the July 26 incident where he was caught on a dash camera threatening to “blow a hole’’ through a driver’s head.
LeBert will be interviewed about the details of the confrontation, Medford Police Chief Leo Sacco told Boston.com. The driver who recorded the exchange was previously interviewed two weeks ago.
Sacco said no report has been written by LeBert or anyone else at this point, but even if a preliminary report has been filed, it would be sealed as part of the investigation.
LeBert has previously been suspended from the Medford Police Force four times.
Sacco aims to have the Internal Affairs report sent to the Mayor by August 28.
On August 25, Sacco will join Medford City Council candidate Michael Ruggiero in an open conversation with the public concerning crime prevention, neighborhood watch, and neighborhood walks.
Sacco said that he will not be able to speak about the LeBert matter there, but is open to receive other questions that the public may have or complaints they may wish to air.
Ruggiero told Boston.com that, while the LeBert case is important, it’s not the focus of the event.
“I’m sure the issue of LeBert will come up, and I’m sure people will want to voice their frustrations,’’ he said. “I think we can look at LeBert to open up more of a relationship with the Medford police.’’
Ruggiero is optimistic about the event, and the creation of a community watch. He said he was impressed by how receptive Sacco was to the idea.
“If you’re going to facillitate trust, you need to have a conversation where people can share their frustrations,’’ he said.
That discussion will be held in the Magoun room of the Medford Public Library on August 25, starting at 6:30 p.m.
