There’s a ‘Black Lives Matter’ banner hanging over Somerville’s City Hall

A “Black Lives Matter’’ hangs over the entrance of Somerville’s City Hall

Somerville is making a statement at its City Hall. The city has hung a “Black Lives Matter’’ banner over the entrance of the building, The Boston Globereports.

“We see this as an important opportunity for an important national conversation,’’ Mayor Joe Curtatone told the Globe, noting the act was “a very clear statement we are making to the community that we recognize that structural racism exists in our society; it exists in our public and private institutions.’’

Curtatone worked closely with Black Lives Matter Cambridge to create the banner. Support of the movement is not meant to criticize or directly target the Somerville Police Department, Curtatone told the Globe, but rather is a “statement of faith’’ in the department.
