A passenger in a car was shot dead Wednesday night near Cambridge’s booming tech district, Kendall Square.

Rasaun Nichols, a 31-year-old from Cambridge, was struck by multiple gunshots while he was in a car that was leaving Newtowne Court just before 9 p.m., according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

After the shots were fired, the driver continued down Main Street, stopping in Kendall Square, according to the DA’s office.

Nichols was pronounced dead after he was transported to a local hospital, police said.

Immediately after the shooting, MIT police told students to avoid the area, as a suspect or suspects were still at large.
