Photos: Abandoned Chinese restaurant still stands in Saugus

Weylu’s remains abandoned and decaying alongside Route 1, where it’s sat vacant for the last five years.

Weylu’s, the Saugus Chinese restaurant known for its palace-like design, officially closed more than five years ago. Since then, it has sat abandoned and decaying alongside Route 1, littered with shattered glass, old take-out containers, and peeling paint.

The 51,000-square-foot establishment that once served dim sum and spare ribs to hungry patrons is as a shell of its former, luxurious self. Unpaid taxes, liquor law violations, and a shooting are responsible for shuttering the restaurant, which cost $13 million to build in the 1980s, The Boston Globe reported.

In 2013, the vacant property sold for $4 million, but the new owner has yet to redevelop the space. The iconic building stands as a landmark for the North Shore town, reminiscent of over the top decor and indulgent dining that drew crowds from across the state.
