Teacher killed in hit-and-run mourned by hundreds at former school

Hundreds of mourners filled Central Middle School in Quincy on Monday to remember Emily Zarnoch. Dina Rudick / The Boston Globe

“I know I’m going to forget a lot of things,’’ said Sophia Mercurio, a former student of Emily Zarnoch. “But I know I’ll never forget the impact she had on me.’’

That’s what kind of teacher and person Zarnoch was. She worked as a substitute teacher at Central Middle School in Quincy and before she even had the chance to start a full-time teaching position, she had already touched the lives of hundreds in her hometown—500 of whom turned out for her memorial service on Monday.

Zarnoch was killed in a hit-and-run accident last week when a drunk driver ran her down in Maine, The Boston Globe reported. She was 24.
