Boston 2024’s fatal problem: “As the United States Olympic Committee gathered in San Francisco in December to hear from the four U.S. cities that wanted to host the 2024 Summer Games, two people stood out front holding a banner. The message was a simple one: ‘No Boston Olympics.’ … In retrospect, the presence of the two contracted bannermen was telling. Boston 2024, the city of Boston, and even the USOC either underestimated or undersold the dramatic opposition to hosting the Olympics in Boston.’’ (Boston.com)
Victorious Olympic opponents celebrate with a trip to the bar: “Chris Dempsey, one of the three co-chairs of the group No Boston Olympics, made his way around the room, smiling and shaking the hands of his supporters. Each time he finished one conversation, someone else came to shake his hand, eagerly thanking and congratulating him. Throughout the evening, he took a few moments to himself, sinking into a booth in the back of the room to check his cell phone or talk briefly to his co-chair Kelly Gossett. Speaking of the Donald: “Donald Trump introduced his presidential campaign to the world with a slur against Mexican immigrants, accusing them of being ‘rapists’ and bringing crime into the country. … It was an unfortunate turn of phrase for Trump—in more ways than one. Not only does the current frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination have a history of controversial remarks about sexual assault, but as it turns out, his ex-wife Ivana Trump once used ‘rape’ to describe an incident between them in 1989. Caught on camera: “A Medford police detective has been placed on administrative leave after he was caught on video threatening to ‘blow a hole through your f—ing head’ while pulling over a driver who drove the wrong way at a traffic circle. … ‘You’re lucky I’m a f—ing cop. Cause I’d be beating the f—ing piss outta you right now,’ [the detective said].’’ (Boston.com) It’s not his first: “The Medford police detective who was placed on administrative leave … was previously caught on camera confronting a man who tried to film him.’’ (Boston.com)
A cracker of a sex and drugs scandal across the pond: “In a letter to Parliament, Lord [John] Sewel apologised for the ‘pain and embarrassment’ caused by the release of footage — obtained by the tabloid The Sun on Sunday — which apparently shows him snorting white powder from a woman’s breasts. The Sun also published a picture Monday of Sewel wearing an orange bra and leather jacket, smoking a cigarette.’’ (Politico)
