See, selfie sticks are good for something

Since rising to popularity last year, the selfie stick has seen its fair share of controversy, including the recent Walt Disney World ban.

While the iconic smart-phone accessory has given everyone a new reason to hate tourists and pre-teens alike who avidly use the tool to snap group pictures from odd angles, it turns out that the modern device is actually good for something: saving the lives of a family vacationing in Massachusetts.

Yep, you read that right.

Derrick Johns and his 16-year-old daughter Erynn Johns of Austin, Texas were swimming off Nantucket Tuesday afternoon with a GoPro attached to a selfie stick when the two were caught in a riptide, according to The Boston Globe. Jennifer Johns, Derrick’s wife, saw them struggling to swim and ran in, becoming caught in the riptide herself.

Derrick Johns was able to use the selfie stick to pull his daughter closer to shore where she was rescued by a man on the beach, The Globe reports. Lifeguards were then able to rescue Jennifer Johns.

See, they’re not all bad.
