Professor has extensive alibi for driving citation

Jabari Asim was surprised to find the criminal citation for driving without a license in the mailbox of his Newton home last week. The Boston Globe/Greg M. Cooper

“I’m not surprised to have difficulties with the police. I’m a 52-year-old black man,’’ Emerson College professor Jabari Asim told The Boston Globe. “I’m primarily frustrated because the question for me becomes, ‘How many people does this happen to? And how many of them do not have the resources I have?’’’

Asim, the executive editor of The Crisis, the official publication of the NAACP, recently received a criminal citation in the mail for driving without a license last week, according to the Globe.

Except Asim couldn’t have gotten the citation, he said. He had been at work all day, his wife had the car, and they had a receipt, a witness, and his phone’s GPS data to prove it, the Globe reported.

Asim started to wonder if his race was a factor. According to the Globe, a clerk magistrate will determine whether the charge is warranted, and city officials said they would pay close attention to the outcome.
