Whitey Bulger writes: ‘My life was wasted and spent foolishly’

Three high school students wrote to Whitey Bulger for a history contest on leadership and got a surprising letter back. David L Ryan, Globe Staff

Whitey Bulger thinks he wasted his life. That, at least, is what he told three high school girls who wrote to the notorious Boston gangster as part of a school project, according to The Boston Globe.

Really.

“My life was wasted and spent foolishly, brought shame + suffering on my parents and siblings and will end soon,’’ wrote Bulger in the letter, which was sent to three students at Apponequet Regional High School in Lakeville. “Advice is a cheap commodity some seek it from me about crime — I know only one thing for sure — If you want to make crime pay — ‘Go to Law School.’’’

The Globe reports that the students were working on a history project that dealt with leadership, and decided to reach out to Bulger — who was a leader in all the wrong ways. They were surprised when they received his reply, scratched out in tight cursive on lined paper.

And maybe crime doesn’t pay after all. The project — which included the first written confession and apology anyone can remember seeing from Whitey Bulger — lost in statewide competition.
