Good Monday morning, Boston. Calls for a major changes at the Boston Public Library, a debate over the things we sprinkle on top of ice cream, a Taylor Swift-Apple staredown, and the rest of the news you need to know today.

BPL artwork in a state of neglect: “A report to be released this week will find that the library’s… 320,000 prints and drawings have been neglected for years and are in dire need of space, a massive reorganization, and a complete inventory, according to a draft copy of the consultant’s report obtained by the Globe.

‘The Print Department cannot be expected to function effectively without better oversight, specialized departmental leadership, additional staff, and adequate space for both storage and access,’ wrote Martha Mahard, a Simmons College professor hired as a consultant by the library a year ago.’’ (The Boston Globe)

Jimmies are racist? Seriously? “Summer is here, which means reviving the contentious debate over whether or not a favorite ice cream topping’s name has racist origins.

‘I’ve heard them called jimmies … It’s after Jim Crow,’ said Carly Fishkin, 25, who grew up in Wellesley and prefers to call them sprinkles. Her nearby friend, Izak Shapiro, also 25, agreed.

They are two of many who have heard that the word jimmies has deeply racist connotations. ‘I used to call them jimmies,’ said Tracy Drane, 31, who, like Fishkin and Shapiro, was enjoying the frozen treat outside a Somerville J.P. Licks. ‘But now I call them chocolate sprinkles.’’’ (Boston.com)

Taylor stares down Apple (and wins): “When Taylor Swift speaks, even the most powerful company in the world listens.

Less than 24 hours after Ms. Swift complained publicly that Apple was not planning to pay royalties during a three-month trial period of its new streaming music service, the company changed course, and confirmed that it will pay its full royalty rates for music during the free trial.

‘When I woke up this morning and read Taylor’s note, it really solidified that we need to make a change,’ Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, said in an interview late Sunday.’’ (The New York Times)

A milestone for David Ortiz in Red Sox romp: Big Papi Sunday hit “the 476th home run of his career, putting Ortiz in sole possession of 29th place in history. He had been tied with Hall-of-Famers Stan Musial and Willie Stargell.

‘When they start mentioning your name with people like that, the all-timers, it’s something I appreciate,’ Ortiz said after the Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals, 13-2. ‘It’s great, man. I’ve been playing this game a long time. As a kid you dream of watching these guys play, but you don’t dream that far of being mentioned right next to them when it comes down to numbers.

‘You have a good career, you have a productive career, and you work hard and you can get there just like they did.’

Ortiz needs 18 home runs to pass Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff and move into 27th place.’’ ( The Boston Globe)
