Most wanted fugitive, accused of beating a baby, found hiding under a sink
A Belchertown man accused of assaulting a 9-month-old baby has been found less than two weeks after he was added to the Massachusetts State Police’s Top Ten Most Wanted list — hiding under a kitchen sink.
Keith Truehart, 30, is accused of causing severe head and facial injuries to his girlfriend’s daughter last November. According to the State Police, older injuries to the baby’s ribs were also found. All injuries, police believe, were caused by Truehart.
Truehart, who was also wanted by the Amherst police for assault and battery and malicious destruction of property, was named to the Most Wanted list in late May. The additional publicity seems to have helped: Belchertown police said his apprehension was “made possible’’ because of a “very good tip.’’
Truehart was found at his girlfriend’s house — the same girlfriend whose child he is accused of harming. He had, according to police, built himself a little hideout under her sink out of wood and drywall.
Truehart was arraigned at Eastern Hampshire District Court on Wednesday. He was charged with two counts of assault and battery on a child with substantial injury and one count of obstruction of justice/witness intimidation, MassLive reported. He was ordered held without bail.
Truehart’s girlfriend is not under arrest at this time, according toThe Boston Globe. Her child has not been in her custody since last November.
