Police: Officer shoots knife-wielding suspect in Salem

Salem Police said an officer opened fire on a man who was approaching law enforcement with a knife after he had stabbed someone in the neck and arm Tuesday morning.

According to a statement released by police, the 34-year-old stabbing victim identified his attacker as Brock Fleming, 21, of Salem, who police said has a history with the law. Police said Fleming, knife in hand, approached one of the two officers who responded to the scene. That’s when the other officer shot Fleming in his buttocks.

Fleming is charged with assault with intent to murder, mayhem, and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. He is currently being treated for his injury at a nearby hospital.

State Police investigators with the Essex Country District Attorney’s office responded to the incident on Walter Street around 5 a.m. to investigate.
