‘Run Warren Run’ group suspends operations, declares victory anyway

Run Warren Run, the group that spent months trying to get Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president, is declaring victory.

Not victory in their basic stated purpose, no — Warren is still not running for president, and Run Warren Run is suspending operations. But the group’s leaders claimed in a piece for Politico on Tuesday morning that they were still successful because they brought the Massachusetts senator and her causes to the forefront of the political landscape.

“There’s no sugar-coating it: We didn’t achieve our central goal,’’ Ilya Sheyman and Charles Chamberlain, two of the group’s leaders, wrote.

They then proceed to sugar-coat it.

“But look closely at the way the Run Warren Run effort unfolded, and you’ll see why, for us and for the 365,000 people who signed up, this campaign has already succeeded,’’ they wrote. “Although Run Warren Run may not have sparked a candidacy, it ignited a movement.’’

That progressive movement — and, perhaps more importantly, Warren’s personal verve — have catapulted the former Harvard professor to becoming one of the most powerful forces in Washington. She has brought the issue of income inequality to the fore, kept up heated criticism of Wall Street, and pushed the presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to the left on these issues.

She didn’t do it all by herself, the Run Warren Run leaders wrote, taking credit for pushing her message further than it would have gone without a draft Warren movement.

“Warren’s an electrifying communicator. She’s done for C-SPAN what Mad Men did for AMC,’’ they wrote. “By raising the possibility of a Warren run for the presidency, we elevated the significance of her words and actions.’’
