Fire at Cambridge’s Martin Luther King Jr. School sends smoke over city
A fire at the new Martin Luther King Jr. School, which is under construction, in Cambridge sent smoke billowing over the city Saturday afternoon.
The three-alarm fire started shortly before 2 p.m. and was out before 3 p.m., according to Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick.
The new elementary school, which is currently vacant and was expected to open in September, is near the Charles River, between Harvard and Central squares.
Assistant Fire Chief Gerard Mahoney told The Boston Globe that the fire appears to have caused between $2.5 million and $3 million in damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
