Street performers win fight with Faneuil Hall
The show will go on.
Weeks after Faneuil Hall marketplace asked street performers to pay to play at the venerated marketplace, the tourist attraction’s management company has canceled the fees. The marketplace’s performers, who must audition for a spot on the site, said earlier this month they would fight the $500-$2,500 annual toll that was set to take effect in June.
“After careful consideration and a series of good faith discussions, AAC and Faneuil Hall Marketplace Management have decided to forego the implementation of management fees for our Street Performers,’’ Faneuil Hall management company Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation said in a statement Wednesday.
Many of the entertainers have been with Faneuil for years, and rely on tips from spectators.
“They don’t pay us, and now they are asking us to pay them?’’ Berklee College student and Faneuil Hall musician Rebecca Liberman told The Boston Globe last week. “It’s just ridiculous.’’
Ashkenazy noted in the release that the marketplace’s Street Performer Program was crucial to Faneuil Hall’s success, and the renovations scheduled to revamp the site in the coming years. Additional retail space and new glass pavilions are included in the company’s “Master Plan.’’
