Boston’s chief city planner Kairos Shen wants to be fired. According to The Boston Globe, he has a lot riding on it.

Shen is under pressure to resign because Mayor Marty Walsh’s administration wants new leadership for a 2030 city planning effort, according to the Globe.

If Shen is fired instead of leaving on his own accord, he would receive a higher pension. This benefit is part of a law designed to protect employees from politically motivated firings, officials told the Globe.

Shen has been Boston’s top planner since 2002 after being appointed by Mayor Thomas M. Menino. According to Globe reporting, Shen would receive $71,000 a year for the rest of his life. If he resigns, his annual pension would be about $35,000 a year.
