Harvard Business professor asks: Would a good executive hire, or fire, Don Draper?

On Mad Men, Don Draper is an advertising mastermind who rises from obscurity to become one of Madison Avenue’s most recognizable — and sought after — talents.

He’s also a womanizing drunk who routinely breaks rules, disrespects clients and makes his employees cry. What’s a good manager to do?

According to Harvard Business School professor Gautam Mukunda cases like Draper’s come up quite a bit in the business world. As he puts it: “How should a business executive deal with a subordinate whose talents and challenges seem equally vast?’’

Mukunda explored the question in the form of a business school-style case study on Slate this week.

We won’t spoil his conclusion, but if Mukunda’s business sense is as solid as his knowledge of Mad Men, he definitely knows what he’s talking about.
