Gardner Museum offers new reward for return of stolen piece of art

Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for the return of a bronze eagle finial. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is offering a new reward for one of the items stolen from the museum 25 years ago. One hundred thousand dollars is being offered for the return of a bronze eagle finial, one of the least valuable items stolen, according to a report by The Boston Globe. The new offer would be in addition to the $5 million reward for the return of all 12 stolen pieces.

The ten-inch eagle used to sit on top of a pole supporting a Napoleonic flag in the museum, which the thieves also attempted to steal.

The museum’s security director Anthony Amore told the Globe authorities are focusing on the piece because it is one of the lesser known pieces taken and, “there is the possibility that someone who might have it does not realize its importance.’’

The museum is offering confidentiality to anyone who comes forward with information about the finial.

The finial is one of twelve items stolen from the Gardner museum 25 years ago. The thieves, dressed as police officers, absconded with $500 million worth of stolen art.
