Police scrambled to a Quincy parking lot Wednesday morning after a father left his 1-year-old baby in his SUV.

The man had boarded the Red Line at North Quincy station without his child at 7:45 a.m., according to Quincy police. The frantic dad called 911 at 8:20 a.m. while he was on a train headed back to the station. A dispatcher kept him on the phone as officers raced to the parking lot, finding the baby unharmed at 8:27 a.m.

The father will not be charged in the incident, according to MBTA Transit police.

Audio of the 911 call was posted on YouTube by The Patriot Ledger.

The father told WCVB that he had taken his older child to school and then forgot to take the 1-year-old to a day-care center.

“Like many parents, I have a very repetitive morning procedure that involves two day care dropoffs and a Red Line ride,’’ he told WCVB. “The baby had fallen asleep in the child seat, and I went into autopilot.’’

He said it was one of the worst days of his life.
