Happy Monday, Boston. Here’s what you need to know for the day ahead.

The power of media: Less than a week after The New York Times detailed the awful labor and health conditions of manicurists, Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled emergency measures to protect them. “Salons will be required to publicly post signs that inform workers of their rights, including the fact that it is illegal to work without wages or to pay money for a job — a common practice in the nail salon industry, according to workers and owners. The signs will be in half a dozen languages, including those most spoken in the industry — Korean, Chinese and Spanish.’’ (The New York Times)

Barry from Somerville v. Liz from Harvard: President Obama said Sen. Elizabeth Warren is “absolutely wrong’’ for opposing his free-trade deal with 12 Asian countries. “The truth of the matter is that Elizabeth is, you know, a politician like everybody else,’’ [Obama] said. “And you know, she’s got a voice that she wants to get out there. And I understand that. And on most issues, she and I deeply agree. On this one, though, her arguments don’t stand the test of fact and scrutiny.’’ (Yahoo)

Mother’s Day melee at Revere Beach: “Police said at least seven people were arrested in a major brawl on Revere Beach Sunday that snarled traffic and drew dozens of officers from neighboring communities. … Revere Police Sgt. Charlie Ovino estimated about 300 to 400 people congregated around the scene of the fight, making it hard for officers to intervene.’’ (Boston.com)

Pay to play: “In a move that has outraged the popular musicians, acrobats, and other entertainers, Faneuil Hall Marketplace management wants performers to pay fees that run as high as $2,500 annually, saying the charges are needed to offset administration, promotion, and security costs. … Jason Gardner, an escape artist who has performed at Faneuil Hall for more than a decade, said, ‘We’re not going to be taken advantage of, and we’re all on the same page.’’’ (The Boston Globe)

A surprisingly heartfelt visit from Obama to South Dakota: “There’s hardly a state in America that’s more hostile to Obama than South Dakota, where the president’s disapproval rating hovers around 70 percent and the local Republican Party last summer passed a resolution calling for his impeachment. But even in an era of almost unprecedented political polarization, people still want to see their president.’’ (The Washington Post)
