Will Skyscrapers Replace Boston’s Harbor Garage?

The Harbor Garage in downtown Boston. The Boston Globe

Developer Don Chiofaro has dreamed of building skyscrapers where the Harbor Garage sits in downtown Boston since he bought it in 2007.

After years of opposition by the late Mayor Thomas Menino, Chiofaro’s vision is being considered by the city’s current administration, The Boston Globe reports.

Mayor Marty Walsh wants to get rid of the garage and welcome an exciting new project on the waterfront property between the Marriott Long Wharf hotel and Hook Lobster, the Boston Redevelopment Authority says. However, Chiofaro’s proposal to build two towers of 600 and 530 feet, along with 1.3 million square feet of office and residential space on the site, has been met with some opposition, according to the Globe.

Residents at the Harbor Towers condo complex near the garage worry the new skyscrapers would obstruct waterfront views and increase traffic to an already congested Atlantic Avenue. And the nearby New England Aquarium fears construction of such a project would inconvenience its 1.4 million yearly visitors and the construction noise and vibrations might affect its sea creatures, the Globe reports.
