Morning Updates: Warren Inspires Fear, New Yorkers Are Just Like Us, and More
Good morning, Boston. Here are the stories you need to know for the day ahead.
Wednesdays with Warren: Sen. Elizabeth Warren is on the cover of Bloomberg magazine this month for her ferocious attacks on big banks. “Only two years into her term as senator, she has the kind of clout and attention it takes most lawmakers decades—or a presidential run—to build. Her stance as watchdog over the financial industry helped her win a Senate seat. Now, she’s harnessing that into something bigger and more powerful.’’ (Bloomberg)

Knock knock. Who’s there? A SWAT team: Massachusetts has no laws against “Swatting,’’ which is a prank call that sends a SWAT team of gun-wielding officers to an unsuspecting person’s home. “These calls take resources that would and should be used for true emergencies,’’ Sergeant Joe Bennett of the Hopkinton Police Department said. “It’s a tremendous waste …. We would absolutely support any legislation that strengthens the penalties against incidents such as this.’’ (Boston.com)
Terrorist defender, Whitey lawyer, and storyteller: “From the top of his bald head down to the bright purple toenail polish under his black wingtips, J.W. Carney Jr. is a showman. He loves to spin a good yarn. And after 37 years in courtrooms, he has enough to knit several sweaters.’’ (Boston.com)
Man convicted of killing a Boston Police detective in 1993 gets a new trial: “In seeking a new trial, [the man’s defense lawyer] argued in 2014 that recently discovered evidence linked [slain detective John] Mulligan to a conspiracy in which Boston officers allegedly robbed drug dealers. This connection, she said at the time, revealed a new motive for the slaying and perhaps a different killer.’’ (The Boston Globe)
New Yorkers – they’re just like us! NYC mayor Bill de Blasio wrote a stern missive to his staff after his subway was delayed. “We waited 20 mins for an express only to hear there were major delays,’’ de Blasio wrote. “This was knowable info. Had we had it, we would have avoided a lot of hassles.’’ (The New York Times) New Yorkers and Bostonians aren’t all that different in the end, are we?
Where do I sign up? “The smoky, slightly sweet smell of mesquite filled the air outside Harvard’s science and engineering buildings off Oxford Street early Monday morning. But this was no springtime diversion — instead, it was a 15-hour final exam for a class with a single, mouth-watering problem to solve: how to make the perfect brisket.’’ (The Boston Globe)
