Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Tears Up in Court in First Show of Emotion
With his extended family present, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev showed emotion in the courtroom for the first time on Monday.
Tsarnaev appeared to wipe tears from his eyes and reached for a box of tissues, according to The Boston Globe. Later, he smiled and blew a kiss to his aunt.
The two instances provided rare looks into the mindset of the convicted bomber, who has kept his head down and his facial expressions limited throughout the trial’s heart-wrenching testimony.
The tears came during the testimony of his aunt Patimat Suleimanova, who was attempting to testify in Tsarnaev’s defense. Suleimanova broke down crying and was asked to step off the stand to regain her composure. That’s when Tsarnaev wiped his eyes with tissues and his hands, according to Globe reporter Patty Wen.
The blown kiss came after the jury had already left for lunch break, so it won’t have an impact on their judgments.
In an earlier instance played for jurors, prosecutors showed video of Tsarnaev flicking off a camera in a court holding cell in July 2013.
