Morning Updates: Police Caught on Camera, Vermont Is Skeptical, and More
Happy May Day, Boston. Here’s what you need to know for the day ahead.
Boston officer confronts man taking a video of him: “The video shows the sergeant questioning the man about why he was videotaping. The sergeant said he did not consent to be taped. Then, the sergeant walks over and holds the gun close to the camera, saying, ‘That’s why we’re here.’ … The sergeant involved, Henry Staines, has been counseled that citizens have a constitutional right to videotape officers doing their jobs, [Commissioner Bill] Evans said.’’ (The Boston Globe)
Pedro Martinez explains that epic Yankees-Red Sox brawl: “That’s when [Jorge] Posada came up out of the dugout and started popping off. He was trying to stand up for [Karim] Garcia, but he made a costly error with his word choice. ‘We’re going to get your ass, motherf—–,’ he said in Spanish, adding that if I wanted to fight, to come on over and fight him. I had no reason to fight him. I never had any problem with Posada. But cursing my mom? That’s an unforgivable sin.’’ (Boston.com)
Vermonters are skeptical others will like what Vermont likes: Democratic presidential candidate and Sen. Bernie Sanders is loved in his home state. Elsewhere? Vermont isn’t so sure. “Sanders and his iconoclastic, strident views will make a great Vermont export for a while — certainly a good deal livelier than maple syrup and wooden bowls. But the Oval Office?’’ (The Boston Globe)
The Patriots beef up at the NFL Draft, select Texas lineman Malcom Brown: “It was a classic Patriots move in more ways than one. The 6-foot-2, 320-pound defensive tackle has the ability to play multiple spots on the defensive line in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 front — versatility that is typical of a Patriots first-round pick.’’ (Boston.com)
Lotta explosions: Avengers: Age of Ultron will be the box office behemoth it was designed to be, for better or worse. “If you’re not acquainted with the intricacies of the Marvel universe, it can be hard to keep track of who’s doing what to whom and especially why. … The upshot here is a movie that lumbers along like a front-line tank, hauling the enormous weight of the entire Marvel enterprise along with it, only to routinely work itself into a frenzy of action and then … chill out with scenes of relaxed camaraderie, challenging romance and domestic intimacy.’’ (The New York Times)
Mitt Romney speaks to Utah Valley University graduates: “I am asked what it felt like to lose to President Obama: Well, not as good as winning,’’ Romney said. “Failures aren’t fun, but they are inevitable. More importantly, failures don’t have to define who you are. Some people measure their life by their secular successes. If your life is lived for money and position, it will be a shallow and unfulfilling journey.’’ (Deseret News)
