“Late, dirty’’ trains that caused misery for thousands of commuters this winter have cost MBTA commuter rail operator Keolis $1.6 million, according to a Boston Globe report.

The MBTA’s contract with Keolis allows the agency to penalize the company up to $868,850 each month for poor performance. This latest fine is specifically related to service problems in January and February.

While T officials recognize that this winter’s historic snowfall prevented normal performance for several days following the storms, this had no impact on the amount Keolis, which only restored full service on March 30, was fined, according to the Globe.

Officials from Keolis declined to comment on the fine.
