Marathon Survivor Rebekah Gregory Runs First Race Since Bombing

On Sunday, Boston Marathon bombing survivor Rebekah Gregory crossed the finish line at the UNESCO Cities Marathon in Northern Italy — her first race since the attack and the amputation of her lower left leg.

Gregory participated in the race with the support of humanitarian nonprofit @uxilia Italia, according to Yahoo News. In a piece she wrote for Runner’s World in February, Gregory said she is training for the upcoming Boston Marathon.

Though Gregory, running on a new prosthetic, could not run the entire 26.2, she said in an Instagram post that “the scenery of Italian countryside and the feeling of crossing the finish line….was absolutely incredible.’’

Hours after testifying on the first day of the Dzhokhar Tsarnaev trial, Gregory posted a letter she wrote to Tsarnaev on Facebook. It read, in part:

“TODAY…I looked at you right in the face….and realized I wasn’t afraid anymore.’’

She reiterated those sentiments in her Instagram post this week, writing, “Next time I get blown up the terrorists should do a better job. They may have taken my leg but they have given me an insane amount of determination in its place.’’
