BU and Deval Patrick Almost Had a Deal on West Station Funding
Boston University agreed to help pay for the construction of a commuter rail station in Allston, The Boston Globe reports.
The Globe obtained a letter to former Gov. Deval Patrick from BU’s president Robert A. Brown through a public records request from September that revealed the university’s pledge of $8.33 million for the station.
The proposed station, tentatively named “West Station’’ last fall, would be built at Beacon Park Yard and join the Worcester Line.
Harvard University and the state were already each set to cover a third of the cost for construction of the new commuter rail station, but a spokesperson for BU told The Globe that the university’s pledge was contingent on further conversations and agreements with the state and was never finalized.

Indeed, Brown’s letter said BU would pay only if the university signed an agreement with the state and with Harvard that would ban cars and buses from using BU’s West Campus as a route to the station.
