One Killed, One Injured in Mass Pike Crash

A crash between a tractor-trailer and an SUV Monday morning on the westbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Warren killed one person and left another seriously injured.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the crash occurred at about 8:40 a.m. Upon arrival, troopers discovered that a 2009 Honda Element had been traveling eastbound when it went out of control. Police said the SUV crossed over to the westbound side and collided head-on with the tractor-trailer, causing the truck to cross over the median into the eastbound travel lanes, blocking traffic.

The driver of the Honda, 22-year-old Meaghan Noel of Taunton, was ejected from her vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The tractor-trailer driver, Sandra Debonis, a 52-year-old woman from Warren, Rhode Island, was trapped in the truck’s cab until being extricated by firefighters, police said. She was transported by UMass Life Flight medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

The crash closed all westbound and eastbound lanes. These closures caused traffic backups on the turnpike reaching approximately 8 miles eastbound, 7 miles westbound.

Victims names have not been released at this time.
