Merrimac Couple Allegedly Ran Prostitution Ring From Their Home

A Merrimac husband and wife were arrested Friday after allegedly running a prostitution ring from their home.

Robert Jones, 32, and Marie Sue Shelly, 28, were arrested after a three-month investigation into quality of life concerns in their neighborhood, according to Merrimac Police. During the investigation, lone men were seen coming and going from their house at 24 Nichols St., police said.

On Friday, police received a search warrant for the home. With the help of Massachusetts State Police, they launched an undercover operation where an officer replied to a Craigslist ad, allegedly posted by Shelly. During their meeting, Shelly allegedly offered to perform a sexual act on the undercover state trooper for $100.

Shelly was charged with sexual conduct for a fee and keeping a noisy and disorderly house. Jones, who also had multiple warrants out of New Hampshire for drug related charges, was charged with deriving support from prostitution, keeping a noisy and disorderly house, carrying a dangerous weapon, and being a fugitive from justice.

Police said Jones would attempt to enter the “johns’’’ vehicles, while the men were inside with his wife.

Jones and Shelly are expected to be arraigned later today in Newburyport District Court.
