Ex-Arlington Teaching Assistant Accused of Raping Student

James Henry Martin III, 36, of Woburn. Arlington Police Department

A former middle school teaching assistant in Arlington was arrested Thursday after he was accused of sexually assaulting a former student at the school.

James Henry Martin III, 36, of Woburn, allegedly met the student while working at Ottoson Middle School and stayed in contact with the victim through social media as the minor moved onto high school.

Investigators said Martin sexually assaulted the victim in a parking lot in January 2014. He later dropped the victim off at a nearby restaurant.

Martin was charged with aggravated statutory rape and enticement of a child under 16 for sex. Information about his court dates was not immediately available.

In a statement Thursday night, Arlington Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said Martin was a building substitute teacher who resigned from the district in June 2013.

“We are not aware of any other inappropriate conduct involving any other children,’’ she said. “and we have no reason to believe that any other children were affected.’’
