Cost to Modernize the MBTA More Than Doubled in Six Years

State Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack called the costs facing the MBTA “daunting.’’ Pat Greenhouse/The Boston Globe

Back in 2009, the MBTA estimated that upgrading and modernizing its aging systems would cost $3.1 billion.

On Tuesday, an MBTA official said that the estimated cost of doing the same thing has skyrocketed to $6.7 billion, according to The Boston Globe.

That new amount would be needed to get the T into a “State of Good Repair,’’ a standard that measures the cost of getting infrastructure to its ideal capacity within its design life.

The updated $6.7 billion figure could go even higher, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. The estimate doesn’t include some but not all commuter rail trains and improvements in parking areas and bridges, The Boston Globe reports.
