Early Morning 3-Alarm Fire in Jamaica Plain Displaces Resident
An early morning fire in a Jamaica Plain home displaced one resident, officials said Sunday.
Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald told Boston.com that the fire started in the basement of the 9 Porter Street home around 5 a.m.
The home’s single resident safely escaped with his dog, though the fire was quickly upgraded to three alarms as the quick-moving blaze moved through the structure.

At one point, firefighters battling the fire inside the building were ordered out by the Division 2 chief as the fire deteriorated rapidly, according to MacDonald.
“Ultimately we got the fire out,’’ said MacDonald, who estimated it took about an hour and a half to knock out the blaze.
Firefighters also were able to locate the man’s cat, and reunited the cold, scared feline with its owner.

MacDonald said the fire chief has estimated the damage at about $700,000 dollars.
The resident was transported by EMS to the hospital for evaluation and one firefighter went to the hospital for treatment of a lacerated finger, MacDonald said.
The Red Cross will also provide assistance to the displaced resident.
