7 Horses OK After Roof Collapse in Andover

The roof of the riding ring at Flying High Stables collapsed. Flying High Stables

The roof over an indoor riding ring collapsed overnight, trapping seven horses inside the adjoining building.

“The crisis is over,’’ said David Wilson, owner of Flying High Stables in Andover.

Andover Police Lieutenant John Pathiakis told Boston.com the collapse was reported at 6:39 a.m. and that the Fire Department’s Tech Rescue Team, which has expertise in closed/confined traps, is on the scene.

Wilson said that all seven horses are “utterly uninjured.’’ Wilson said the riding ring “took the bulk of the mess.’’ The Fire Department did have to cut holes in the side of the barn to get to out two horses, whose stalls were blocked by debris.

The cause of the collapse is obvious, according to Wilson. Snow. He said there was about 26 or 27 inches on the corrugated roof. He said he tried to shovel as much as he could off of it, but with the slippery conditions he couldn’t get everything off.

He said the horses had no marks on them despite the collapse.

“It’s miraculous,’’ he said.

Another barn collapse in Westford on Friday did not have the same happy ending. Two of the seven horses trapped in that collapse died.
