Fitchburg Police Shoot, Injure Knife-Wielding Man

Fitchburg police shot and injured a man Friday night who allegedly attacked another man with a knife before charging officers, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

The two involved officers, whose names are being withheld, have been placed on administrative leave, authorities said.

At about 10:45 p.m. Friday, police responded to 620 Pearl Hill Road, where Kevin Cormier, 44, who lives at that address, said that a man with a knife was attacking him. When officers arrived, they were confronted by Richard Hurley, 26, of Leominster, who police say charged the officers despite being told to drop his weapon multiple times, according to authorities.

The officers fired several rounds, which struck Hurley, authorities said.

Hurley was taken to Leominster Hospital and then transferred to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he was in intensive care as of Saturday afternoon.

Cormier was taken to Leominster Hospital with a hand wound before being transferred to UMass Medical Center as well.

Police believe that the attack was an isolated one, and that residents are not in any danger.

Massachusetts State Police are assisting in the investigation.
