MBTA Continues Struggling on Snow-Limited Service

The MBTA again operated on a limited basis on Thursday, with a reduced number of trains running on all subways, trolleys, and commuter rail lines. Delays were similar to issues on Wednesday, hitting the Red and Orange lines the hardest.

Shuttle buses replaced trains on the Red Line between JFK/UMass and Braintree and will continue to do so through Sunday. Waiting lines for the shuttle buses stretched down the block on Wednesday, and a downed light pole at JFK on Thursday morning didn’t help the matter.

The downed light pole had a “significant impact on traffic circulation’’ at JFK/UMass, Amanda Richard of MassDOT said in an email. The pole and wires were removed by 8:30 a.m., an MBTA official said, but traffic remained “moderately delayed.’’ The MBTA asked people to consider avoiding JFK and using the commuter rail from Braintree and Quincy Center Stations.

In addition, the Orange Line continued to operate with one train going back and forth between Wellington and Oak Grove. The north-bound track was out of commission from the deluge of snow and ice, the MBTA said Wednesday.

The delays come after three major storms hit the Boston area over the past few weeks. Another major storm is expected to drop as much as a foot of snow this weekend.
