A woman was seriously injured Wednesday morning after falling from the BU Bridge onto the eastbound side of Storrow Drive, according to Massachusetts State Police.

State troopers responded to the incident just after 11 a.m. Boston Emergency Medical Services were also on the scene.

The 22-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She was “conscious and alert’’ during the transport, the State Police said.

Alisa Bokulich and her husband, Peter, both professors at Boston University, were driving eastbound on Storrow Drive just after the woman fell from the bridge.

While they did not see the fall, Bokulich told Boston.com that she and her husband were among the first to arrive on the scene. Bokulich said she called 911.

The woman was “breathing and conscious, but unable to move or talk with serious injuries,’’ Bokulich said.

Based on her clothing, Bokulich believed the woman had been jogging before the fall. The circumstances of the fall are still being investigated.

“Our hearts go out to her and her family,’’ Bokulich said. “She is in our prayers for a full recovery.’’
