Nantucket Health Officials Investigate Suicides

A deserted and wintry Main Street on Nantucket Rob Benchley for The Boston Globe

The suicides of seven middle-aged residents of Nantucket have the island’s heath officials looking for answers, according to a recent story published by The Boston Globe. Officials told The Globe that each of the deceased, who are among a streak of suicides that have occurred since October, struggled with substance abuse, but that economic pressures and depression may also have been factors.

Data from the Barnstable County human services department showed suicides on the Cape and Islands went up 140 percent between 2000 and 2011, with 36 suicides occurring in 2011 alone.

One health official told The Globe that “breaking down’’ a reticence to ask for help by year-round Nantucket residents is essential.
