Storm Brings Coastal Flooding to Marshfield
Some Marshfield residents woke up to more than just snow outside their homes this morning, as coastal flooding surged overnight with the arrival of the blizzard. The waves cause a section of the town’s sea wall to collapse, damaging an adjacent home.
Marshfield Fire Chief William Hawking told Boston.com that the damaged portion of the seawall in Marshfield is between 50 and 80 feet long.
“There are more than a few buildings with structural damage,’’ he said. “We’re out there working, assessing the damage and doing the best we can, preparing for the next high tide.’’
According to police, there was an “extremely high tide’’ around 4 a.m. and another is expected to occur again around 5 p.m.
Hawking estimates that fewer than 20 people have been relocated to the town’s emergency shelter at Furnace Brook Middle School. The town is under coastal flood warning and a state of emergency with a travel ban.
