16-Year-Old Charged in Assault, Robbery Spree

A 16-year-old suspect is being held on more than $2 million cash bail for allegedly committing several assaults earlier this month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said in a statement.

Conley’s office believes that the juvenile, a resident of Lancaster with ties to Dorchester, was involved in several incidents over two different nights. In the first, at around 10 p.m. on January 11, prosecutors believe the suspect approached a male teen at Fields Corner station, demanding money and motioning to his waistband as if he was carrying a gun. The victim had no money, so the assailant instead took the victim’s Samsung S1 phone.

The next three assaults took place beginning shortly after midnight on January 13. Prosecutors said that in the first incident, the suspect attempted to abduct a woman, sticking what she thought was a gun in her back. The woman was able to escape, and ran to a nearby police station.

Prosecutors said that in the next incident, which took place around 12:25 a.m., the suspect took an iPhone from a woman while riding the Red Line inbound between Savin Hill and Andrew stations. He also allegedly tried to drag her from the train.

Then, around 12:45 a.m., prosecutors claim that the suspect assaulted yet another woman at Fields Corner, again sticking what she thought was a gun in her back and then allegedly sexually assaulting her at a nearby location. The suspect also robbed her of her purse, according to the district attorney’s office.

Conley’s office said that MBTA Transit Police and the Boston Police Department worked together to identify the suspect. Video surveillance of the juvenile gathered after the January 11 attack was matched with descriptions from the other victims and surveillance footage from the January 13 attacks, leading authorities to believe that all four offenses were the work of one person.

A few hours after the final assault took place, a Transit Police officer, watching surveillance video from Fields Corner station, spotted a teen wearing clothing consistent with descriptions given by the four victims. Officers responded, ordering all trains held at the station, but the suspect was not found at the scene. He was soon located at a nearby McDonalds on Dorchester Avenue.

Conley’s office said the suspect was found to have a replica gun in his possession, as well as a bank card and two iPhones, which were determined to belong to two of the victims.

All told, the teen was charged Tuesday in the Juvenile Session of Dorchester Municipal Court with delinquency, to wit: armed robbery, kidnapping, assault with intent to rape, assault with intent to murder, and indecent assault and battery, and held on a total of more than $1 million cash bail. This comes in addition to January 14 proceedings in Suffolk County Juvenile Court, where he was charged with delinquency, to wit: kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery, and attempted kidnapping, and held on a total of $1 million cash bail. The juvenile is due back in court on February 10.
